Why should we care about the environment? Does climate change exist?

These are big questions that deserve our undivided attention.

Over the years, people have become divided on environmental issues. On one hand, we have nay-sayers, people who pooh-pooh the idea that climate change is a real and serious threat to our habitat, the planet. On the other hand, we have environmentalists, humans who forge bonds and alliances and who refuse to let bad habits get in the way of environmental durability and sustainability.

Here are a few sobering facts that may spike the world to action:

  • according to an article recently posted in The Guardian, 2017 was a record-breaking year because the ocean waters were the hottest ever recorded. Author John Abraham convincingly argued that the warm ocean temperatures should be alarming, and for specific reasons. « The fact that 2017 was the oceans’ hottest year doesn’t prove that humans are warming the planet. But the long-term upward trend that extends back many decades does prove global warming. » To read the entire article, please click here: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/climate-consensus-97-per-cent/2018/jan/26/in-2017-the-oceans-were-by-far-the-hottest-ever-recorded
  • although U.S. President Donald Trump initially overlooked the importance of the Paris climate deal, rumours are being confirmed that Trump is now reconsidering his move. The landmark treaty, which readers may recall was signed by 195 nations, was set up to incite countries to cut carbon emissions drastically. If Trump is backtracking now, does his hesitation confirm the importance of the climate deal?
  • the air quality in London is concerning so many cyclists that an app has been created to measure air pollution. The numbers are not pretty. Diesel vehicles are to blame for producing nitrogen dioxide (NO2), which has been linked to respiratory disease.
